Who are your favorite artists?
I do not have a favorite artist of any of genre. Sure there may be things I see, hear, smell that I like, but even that is few and far between. I am attracted to art that has a story behind it.
For example the the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence Italy looks like any other old-huge
-impractical church to me. UNTIL Jeri and I watched Masters of Florence on Netflix and learned that they started construction KNOWING they had no idea how to do the dome. They just expected that over the next 100 years of construction someone would figure it out. Now that is a story and if I ever go to Florence, I absolutely want to see it.
More practically, here are examples from my home Office:
KAWS Bike - While I have ridden it, it is really art. Lance Armstrong had it commissioned, rode it, and auctioned it for charity. The story: This is the bike he was riding when he broke is collar bone. The ONLY injury (other than cancer) he had as a pro.
Clay Face Pot - This was done by a family friend, teach, and repressed artist. It is kind of a self portrait. The Story: He was super talented, regularly misunderstood, and champion of the underdog. I wish I had been a better friend. When I look at it I either smile or am sad.
America’s Cup Poster - Many would say this is not really art. I don’t care. When the race was in Bermuda Jeri gave me a gift of lodging and access to all the races. The story: She took a huge risk to give this to me. (No refund by the time she actually presented it.) AND for our first set of guests we had my Mom, Dad, and Brother on board. Back in 1974 the 4 of us lived on a sail boat for 14 months. On a day where there were no Cup Races the captain took us out on the ocean for the day. My original Mulder family sailed again all together, for likely the last time.
So, for me it is not about the artist or even the esthetics. I am only interested if it has a story.
