I Ride For: Sherri

I Ride For: Sherri

As I rode today, Sherri is recovering from her first cancer surgery. While she recovers she needs to wait for the pathology report that will take 1-2 weeks. That is a lot of time to think. Yikes! How does someone balance optimism, reality, and pessimism with something like this. I cannot imagine what this is like.

So what could I do today for Sherri to show my support. I could do a ton of climbing on my bike, but I actually like climbing so that would not really count. I could go really far or really fast, but my legs are completely shot. My Garmin computer is actually telling me after every ride “workout unproductive”. This is always really encouraging. Ha! And then it came to me: I needed to get miles in to make my Great Cycle Challenge goal but I really need to rest so I’ll ride to the beach and take a picture in the sand.

Now most of you normal people are scratching your heads because I just wrote “climbing would not really count” because I like it. You are thinking, so he is going to the beach, how is this supporting Sherri? Well, it is all in the perspective. I love the beach just like most people. I love the sun, water, and watching the boats. It would be my favorite place if the concrete went all the way to the water. I hate sand! It is sandy! It is hard to walk in, you never know what you might step on, and did I write that it is sandy! It gets everywhere and is impossible to get rid of.

So Sherri, that is where I went - to the beach. I parked my bike in the sand. I walked in the sand. I set my phone in the sand. (I did not go in the water. You are sick, but not that sick. The only thing worse than sand is being in sand wet. You’re gonna have to get a lot worse for me to do that! Gross!)

It was a beautiful evening for a bike ride. I did end up climbing a little, and I did ride pretty fast going home. My computer once again yelled at me when I got home. And there is sand in my gears, gloves, shoes, sunglasses, phone, shirt, and shorts! How did it get there in 5 minutes! See this stuff is horrible. But for you it was completely worth it.

SHINE!
