Building A Great Business
I remember hearing about Zingerman’s when my brother was a student a the University of Michigan. They make phenomenal sandwiches, is what he and a few friends told me. Whatever, I was not a big sandwich person and food is food. Right? Wrong!
Decades later, I found myself at Zingerman’s and from almost to moment I walked in, I was hooked. My favorite story is from Ari (a Founder and the author of this book), “When interviewing prospective employees, if they do not make eye contact within 10 feet and smile within 3 feet, the interview is done. If they cannot smile at an interview, how are they going to handle a customer who waited 2 hours for a sandwich and we made it wrong?”
I now go to Zingerman’s whenever I drive even close to Ann Arbor. I was actually hoping to do my cancer treatment at UofM so I could go to Zingerman’s. I ended up in Boston. Food is good there, but I have not found a Zingerman’s.
Much of what makes this company special is documented in this book. Ari spells out all the “secrets” in essays that can be read in any order. (Of course I read from front to back. Ha!). I highly recommend the food, the book, and most of all the experience.
